Give and Take, 2026
Plaster
Variable - image 92 × 92cm

Give and Take was created by asking people passing through my studio to let me cast the palm of their hand. The project then expanded when I asked more people, many not artists, to take part during an open studio event and in our studio’s working yard. Although I was asking people to ‘lend me a hand’ and give their time, they often ended up thanking me as if I had given them something. The gesture of their open, out stretched hand held over 10 minutes while the plaster set also took on a significance which could have been read as either giving or taking. Without explanation, the delicate plaster forms do not immediately register as human hand prints, and yet when they do their quality of each one being different although fundamentally the same as the others is a reminder that as humans we ‘have more in common’ than we do that separates us if only we can remember that this is true.
